In a country which has one of the highest child mortality and maternal mortality rates in the world, telemedicine or IT-based health services offer a new opportunity. We cannot provide a doctor for each village, but we definitely can provide a computer in each village. This will link the village to the health services available inside and outside the country. IT-based health services, information services, entertainment services can be combined and offered as business. This should not be conceptualised as an extension of government-run health service. Privately-run IT kiosks could be sources of village-level health information for all health practitioners, researchers, policy-makers, businesses, academics --- government or private. With voice-to-text facilities, Internet telephony, image transfer facilities range of possibilities in providing health services enormous is endless.
