Nobel Laureate and Father of Microcredit Professor Muhammad to
Inaugurate Grameen International Conference on Microcredit in India

A Grameen International Conference on Microcredit in India and a Training Program on Grameen Generalized System (GGS) will be organized by Grameen Trust India (GTI) in Mumbai from February 1 to 3, 2007. The Conference will be inaugurated by Nobel Laureate and father of microcredit Professor Muhammad.

The Conference will highlight keynote addresses on present prospect and future of microcredit in India, challenges of reaching the poorest with microcredit, regulatory and legal issues facing microfinance development in India, and participation of commercial banks and other financial institutions in microfinance development in India. Microfinance leaders in India are expected to present papers as authors, chair sessions and participate as panelists in the Conference. Delegates from Grameen Trust partners and other microfinance practitioners in India, as well as policy makers and leaders of public and private sectors, business executives, social activists, members of the civil society, academia, diplomats, and other dignitaries are expected to participate in the Conference.

The Training Program on Grameen Generalized System following the conference will focus on the latest innovations from the Nobel Prize winning organization: Grameen Bank.

Professor Muhammad will formally inaugurate Grameen Trust India during the Opening Ceremony of the Conference. Grameen Trust India (GTI), which began operations on January 1, 2007, is a liaison office supporting the microfinance activities in India. Dr. B. N. Kulkarni, formerly General Manager, NABARD, is heading GTI as its Director.

Awarded Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo

The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded Professor Muhammad and Grameen Bank the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize at a star-studded ceremony held at the Oslo City Hall on December 10, 2006. Professor Yunus and Mosammat Taslima Begum, who represented Grameen Bank, received Nobel Peace Prize Medal and Diploma from the Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee at a ceremony attended by royalty and dignitaries from around the world. HRH Queen Sofia of Spain was a special guest of Professor Yunus at the ceremony. For the first time in history, both Royal Highnesses the King and Queen of Norway attended the Peace Prize award ceremony.

In his remarkable and inspiring speech Professor Yunus declared poverty a denial of human rights and a threat to peace. He recalled the examples set by Grameen of poverty alleviation through microcredit and called on the leaders and citizens of the world to work together to put poverty in the museum.

Grameen Trust is committed to the cause of poverty alleviation. It uses microcredit as a tool for fighting poverty and follows Grameen Bank Approach for the purpose. It was established by Professor Muhammad in 1989. It is a non-profit and non-government organisation.
Under its Grameen Bank Replication Program (GBRP) program, Grameen Trust (GT) supports and promotes poverty focused microcredit programs all over the world. It organises Dialogue Programs for potential replicators and provides training and technical assistance to replication projects. It provides funding to selected projects and monitors their performance. Up to the end of October 2006 it has provided support to 138 replication partners in 37 countries of the world.
In special circumstances, where there is the need for immediate and rapid implementation of poverty focused microfinance programs, GT directly implements the projects under its ?Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT)? program.
Grameen Trust hosts the Grameen Global Network (GGN) and publishes the Grameen Dialogue Newsletter to promote the cause of microcredit movement.
