Sources of Funding

?

Donors:

GT has received funds from the MacArthur Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, UNCDF, GTZ, USAID, the World Bank, UNHCR, UNOPS, the CitiGroup Foundation and the Fred Foundation for the Grameen Bank Replication Program. Negotiations are in process with several other donors.

?

People?’s Fund:

In March 1995, GT started a special initiative to raise a $ 100 million fund called the People?’s Fund. The Fund owes its origin to the firm conviction that people can take the lead in the fight against poverty and show the way for more meaningful involvement of the governments and the global and regional development financial institutions. The objective is to reach 1 million people who would contribute $ 100 (or its equivalent in other currencies) each to this fund to achieve the target of accumulating $ 100 million. The People?’s Fund has received a positive global response.

Funding from GT

On the basis of program design, management capability, and the consistency of the project objectives with those of GT, financial assistance is provided to potential and existing replication projects in the form of seed capital and scaling-up funds. Seed capital is provided to facilitate the initiation of GB replication projects. Scaling-up funds are provided for the expansion of successful replication projects on a sustainable basis. Typically, both seed capital and scaling-up funds are provided as a combination of soft loans and interest-free loans. By July 1999, GT had approved financial assistance to 89 projects in 28 countries.
