Professor Yunus Honored in Benin



Professor Yunus visited Benin in February 2008 at the invitation of His Excellency Dr. Boni Yayi, President of Benin. The government of Benin is launching microfinance for the poor as a national strategy and had invited Professor Yunus to visit the country and share his experiences. Professor Yunus delivered a special lecture at the Palace in the presence of the President, all cabinet ministers and other top policy makers of the country. He also visited a special poverty alleviation project that has 5,000 microcredit borrowes. Professor Yunus was decorated with the Order of Benin by the Grand Chancellor of Decoration in a ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Cotonou on February 20, 2008.




Mayor of Houston Declares January 14 as Muhammad Day





Houston, one of the largest cities in US, has declared January 14 as Muhammad Day to honor Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad. Mayor Bill White made the declaration and handed over a copy of the proclamation to Professor Yunus at a reception in honor of Professor Yunus, who was visiting Houston during his book tour.





Professor Muhammad Discusses Global Food Crisis with PM Gordon Brown




British Prime Minister Gordon Brown met with Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad at 10 Downing Street on April 21, 2008, and discussed about the extreme difficulties created on the poor by the global rise in prices of essential food items. Professor Yunus proposed a global initiative to redress the immediate pressure. He pointed out that a powerful breakthrough is needed in agri-technology to raise the production level in the shortest possible time. They also discussed about the need for microcredit intervention for poverty alleviation in Africa.



The Tech Museum Honors Professor Yunus with 2008 Global Humanitarian Award
