People’s Fund for Microcredit Programs

Grameen Trust (GT) launched the People's Fund in March 1995, to raise funds from individuals around the world to support the Grameen Bank Replication Program. In initiating the Fund, GT hoped that individuals could take the lead in demonstrating to governments and development organizations, the power of microcredit and the effect of individual contributions. We urged each interested person to persuade four other friends to contribute US$ 100 each and create a Grameen Support Group.

With the individual contribution in People's Fund collected to date, GT has provided Funds to six of its partner organizations in Bangladesh, Uganda and Tanzania. The entire contribution was provided for onlending funds only, i.e. fund has gone entirely into the hands of the poor as loans.

These six organizations, MCDT in Uganda, Jecy Trust in Tanzania, IDF, CWFD, DSK and MAMATA in Bangladesh, have collectively reached 178,552 poor families upto January 2006. If we assume that each family has five members, these contributions have impacted about 893,000 poor people. This has been the impact of the People's Fund!

In this way, GT hopes to reach more poor people in coming years through you contributions to the People's Fund. Join the global Grameen movement today and be a partner in creating a poverty-free world!
