Five hundred more clients will be reached in Masbate, the poorest area served by CARD, as a result of a grant from the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives and the Gender Equity Fund. These funds, administered by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), will put P.950,000 into the hands of poor women in the most depressed communities of Placer and Cataingan. CARD has been operating in the island of Masbate, in the Bicol region, since 1991. A recent impact study of CARD found that income gains in this branch as a result of continued access to credit were higher than in the less-poor areas that CARD serves near San Pablo.
