A workshop on Microcredit: The Next Generation Issues was held on June 10 1998. It was organised by the Program for Research on Poverty Alleviation of Grameen Trust. The workshop was attended by many government and non-governmental practioners, researchers and policy makers. Among them were Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, Director of PKSF, Dr. Humaira Islam, Executive of Shakti Foundation, representatives of leading NGO's like BRAC, Proshika, ASA and senior management staff of Grameen Bank. The workshop focused on the challenge confronting microcredit finance institution in the next phase of their development. It also aimed at setting an agenda through the exchange of information, ideas, to further assist microcredit programs to achieve the objective of poverty alleviation through financially viable institutions. Four sessions of the workshops were organized on the following issues:
i) Targeting the Poorest versus Achieving Financial Sustainability : the current schism in microcredit
ii) Widening the Target Group: new products and new financial technologies
iii) Accessing Non Donor Sources of Financing iv) Internal and external Governance
