I am very glad to inform you that on November 17, 2004 we started the GRAMEEN ECUADOREAN NETWORK. FUDECE took the initiative of inviting four Grameen type institutions, which have very good performance in replicating the Grameen model, to attend a meeting for this purpose. We met in Guayaquil to exchange information about our experiences and to define the Network objectives, based on those of the Grameen Global Network.
The exchange of experiences revealed remarkable information that has been consolidated in Table 1.
Teresa Criollo (Huellas Banco Grameen) and Ricardo Patiño (Coop. De Ahorro y Credito “De Todas”) contacted me when I came back from Bangladesh in 1999. They read the book "Hacia un Mundo sin Pobreza" and were keen to replicate Grameen. I shared what I had learnt at Grameen Bank with them, as well as some of the Spanish translations of Grameen literature that I had made. We have been in touch since then, sharing information, experiences and contacts. Enrique de la Cruz (Banco Grameen Amazonas) was a Bank Worker at the YMCA Grameen Replication Program; I trained him, we worked together for a year or so.
Hogar de Cristo (Chief: Patricia Ordóñez) made a study visit to the Loja Program "En las Huellas del Banco Grameen". Hogar de Cristo is an NGO with 30 years of experience on credit for housing. They won the Habitat Award on 1997.
All the chiefs of the Network members attended a workshop on Grameen Basics in June 2002. In 2003, Enrique de la Cruz asked me for assistance to start a Grameen type program in Lago Agrio. I trained him on management, helped design the credit system and raise seed capital, and also transferred the know-how I acquired from Grameen Bank.
As you can see, we have a common history which, in my opinion, illustrates that the Grameen Global Network really works!
We can proudly say that the Grameen Ecuadorean Network, in less than five years, has won an important place within the microcredit sector in Ecuador. We are quite sure that the exchange of experiences will be stronger from now on, and will help to consolidate and scale-up our activities. The Network will also facilitate an even better promotion of Grameen projects in our country and other Latin American countries that contact us quite frequently.

We will be having our next meeting on March 2005, in Loja. Some of the institutions that have funded our programs, like Esquel Foundation and Repsol-YPF Foundation , are interested in attending the meeting.
