Immediate Response by Grameen Bank
Grameen Bank activated its emergency procedure as soon as the early warning of the cyclone was announced by the Bangladesh Weather Bureau. Grameen Bank Head Office immediately set in motion the control room for monitoring and warning procedure Possible zones and areas were alerted over mobile phones. Necessary instructions were reiterated.

Monitoring: A Control Room and a Monitoring Cell was set up in the Grameen Bank Head Quarter.

Helpline has been created for keeping close contact with the members and their families. Grameen Bank is providing all out support and advice to the Grameen workers in the field to take on the spot decisions to help affected families

Grameen Bank Loan Program

Suspension of Loan Repayments: Grameen Bank has immediately suspended all its Old Loan repayments till 30th June 2008. In case of those facing difficulties, this grace period will be extended. No further interest will be collected in these loans.

Interest free loans extended for rebuilding and repairing houses:
a.    Most affected families: Tk. 10,000
b.    Moderately affected families: Tk.5,000
c.    Mildly affected families: Tk.2,500

Village Phone: New loans will be provided by GB to telephone ladies to replace cell phones lost during the disaster.

Relief Activities:

Cash Handout for buying food and necessities have been given by GB in in the affected areas 

Medical Centers: Grameen Bank has sent out  medical teams, each headed by graduate doctors, and supported by paramedics. These teams are handing out essential medicines and other services for free. Packets of saline and alum have been distributed widely among the affected members. Local livestock management officials were contacted and camps for treatment of domestic and farm animals were set up.

Water Purification: GB is currently pumping out the toxic waters from the ponds and replacing it with fresh water in places where there is no scope for digging wells or tube-wells. Water that needs purification will be treated with alum and lime. The water purification treatment is being undertaken by Grameen Bank in a few places. Other organizations and villagers are being encouraged to do the same in other areas.

Distribution of Warm Clothes: GB is distributing warm clothes amongst children and free blankets among the member families.

Cooking Materials: GB is providing pots, pans and necessary cooking materials.

Cooking Repair and Rebuilding of Center Houses: Grameen Bank has undertaken to repair and rebuild destroyed and damaged center houses.

Distributions of Seeds: Vegetable seeds have been distributed among affected families.

Payment of Exam Entry Fees: GB is paying the exam fees for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) Candidates.
