Yunus Receives Peru's Highest National Honour |

Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus was honoured by President Alan
Garcia of Peru with the country's highest national honour, Order of the
Sun in the Grade of Grand Cross at a majestic ceremony at the
Ambassadors' Room of the two century old Presidential Palace, Torre
Tagle Palace, in Lima yesterday. President Alan Garcia, put on the Gold
Medal and the Grand Ribbon on Professor Yunus in the award ceremony
attended by former President of Peru Alejandro Toledo (now leader of the
opposition Party), President Vinicio Cerezo, former President of
Guatemala, ministers and high officials, twenty ambassadors, elites of
the city and the media. President paid glowing tribute to Professor
Yunus for his innovative work which benefits hundreds of thousands of
poor women all over Peru, particularly in poor Andean Region of Peru.

Professor Yunus is visiting Peru at the invitation of former President
Toledo to promote social business in Latin America. During his stay in
Lima, Professor Yunus addressed an open-air gathering of 5000 low-income
people in the shantytown on the edge of Lima.
Professor Yunus also received two honorary degrees from Universidad San
Ignacio de Loyola and from Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos.
These awards were given to Professor Yunus as recognition for his
innovative and tireless efforts to fight against poverty. Professor
Yunus was in Lima for a day on September 27.
