People’s Fund for Microcredit Programs

In March 1995, Grameen Trust (GT) launched the People’s Fund to raise funds from individuals around the world support the Grameen Bank Replication Program. In initiating the Fund, GT hoped that individuals would take the lead in demonstrating to Governments and development organizations the power of microcredit and the effect of individual contributions. We urged each interested person to persuade four other friends to contribute US$ 100 each and create a Grameen Support Group.

With the individual contributions collected to date in the People’s Fund, GT has provided funds to five of its partner organizations in Bangladesh, Uganda and Tanzania. The entire amount of the contributions was provided for on-lending funds only, i.e. funds have gone entirely into the hands of the poor as loans. These five organizations, MCDT in Uganda, Jecy Trust in Tanzania, IDF, CWFD and DSK in Bangladesh, have collectively reached 110,520 poor families. If we assume that each family has five members, these contributions have impacted about 552,600 poor people. This has been the impact of the People’s Fund! In this way, GT hopes to reach more poor people in the coming years though contributions to the People’s Fund. Join the global Grameen movement today and be a partner in creating a poverty-free world!
